Christmas celebrations 2016

Christmas has arrived at The Red Notebook HQ in London. My last weekend was spent sorting out old Christmas decor and chucking away loads of rubbish. We also managed to make space for our lovely tree in the Living room. So finally, we welcomed the festive spirit in full glory.

Browsing local flea markets and high street shops fuels my decor inspiration. Every year it starts to feel a little festive for me once I start working on decor ideas. So this year we have a red and white festive theme. Irrespective of the space you have, you can go full out to adorn your abode with festive decor. Today I am sharing some very simple decor ideas that I worked on this year to welcome the spirit of Christmas.

  • Festive garland on the mantelpiece

Decorating your mantelpiece can immediately bring some festive warmth to your living space. Decorate your mantelpiece with festive garland and tea lights this Christmas. I bought this one from Christmas markets at Muswell Hill. Your local Christmas markets are full of festive inspirations and unique ideas – do pay them a visit.

  • Use a festive table cloth

Set the table for an unforgettable Christmas lunch/dinner using a festive table cloth. It’s also the time when your loved dining table will be used the most. So show some extra love by decorating it with festive table cloth and coasters.

  •  Cake stand and Candles as a centerpiece

Cake stands are very versatile. You can use them to serve food or even as a table centrepiece. I have used my cake stand with a pillar candle and a small berry wreath to create a beautiful centrepiece.

The Red Notebook had a great 2016 and I would like to thank all my lovely readers and followers for following our fashion and style journey. I hope we managed to add some fashion fun in your everyday life. Wishing you all a very, very happy holiday season.

Party Season Favourites

party

Party season is coming and we finally have a serious excuse to wear glittery, sparkly and fancy clothes without the fear of being too much. Lucky us, this season is all about luxury textiles in amazing earthy or deep jewel tones, as well as sparkly details; as extreme as it gets. And who doesn’t love dressing-up? Especially with clothes that make us feel prettier than ever but don’t have the opportunity to wear whenever we want. Our time is around the corner!

A great place to consider for your party-ing attires, is Topshop. Depending on the occasion, your mood and your taste, there is something for all. From gorgeous formal maxi dresses like this, to mini dresses and trendy skirts.

Other than that, here are some beautiful options from the latest trends to check-out, if you’re going to parties and want to look your best.

The Statement Skirt

A statement skirt like this black sequin midi from Warehouse, is a chic and classy way to make an entrance. Wear it with a simple silk blouse and minimal accessories in order to let the skirt speak for itself.

The Velvet Dress

Velvet is hands down the fabric of the season. It is luxe, elegant and adds value in any form. A wine coloured mini dress like this from Mango, is the easiest choice for a party. With a dress like that, you will look fashionable without much effort from you. Pair it with sleek black pumps and voilà!

For a while I have been meaning to find a nice banarasi dupatta. I didn’t want anything in the red/pink colour palette. I wanted a unique colour to complement the festive season and my off-white palazzo suit. Diwali is a festive time and calls for lots of parties and events. I had to plan a few outfits for this season for various events and as usual my first point of contact for Indian clothes is Jyoti Chandhok. In her studio, there is a whole load of fabric and fashion treasure. Her designs are so classic that you can never go wrong with them. When I saw this burnt orange coloured banarasi dupatta, I simply fell in love with the colour. I loved the modern chevron design on the dupatta. The burnt orange colour was very unique and was totally apt for this Autumn.

I wore this dupatta on my off-white palazzo suit which I bought from India during my last trip. I bought this suit from Delhi at an exhibition. This suit is very versatile and can be easily teamed up with different coloured dupattas to create unique looks. If you want to keep the look a bit muted, then just wear a plain off-white dupatta. But if you want to go for a festive look, try a bright coloured dupatta.

I wore this dupatta for a day Diwali event and styled it with my favourite festive mojris from Jaipur. I love these juttis – they go with any ethnic look and are so comfortable. I wear them with most of my Indian outfits. See how I have styled them here and here. My earrings are from Jewellery by DivyaChugh

How did you dress up for Diwali? Would love to hear your Diwali fashion experiences. I will be sharing my actual Diwali outfit and decor ideas post soon. Till then, enjoy the Autumn sunshine.

My Skirt Story – All the way from Pakistan

This is a very long overdue post. I have been itching to write it but could never prioritise it enough. Being a working mum and trying to juggle so many responsibilities makes me want to go in a dark zone and not be accountable for anything. But my blog inspires me to set my priorities and keeps pulling me back from that zone.

So, the story on the blog today is about my gorgeous embroidered skirt all the way from Pakistan. As you know, last year I was planning my outfits for my brother’s wedding and made one epic trip to India (that reminds me, I have to share my shopping stories). I had a set budget for my shopping haul and wanted to explore various designers. Also I wanted to get something which I would be able to wear in London as well. I did a lot of research on how I want my outfits to be, where I should get them from et al. This one outfit which I wore on two different occasions was not on my list. So the story goes like this – I was helping out designer Jyoti Chandhok at an event in London. I love Jyoti’s work and think she is one of the very few designers in UK who have something unique to offer. It so happened that at the same event I spotted Nabeel’s work. Unlike other vendors, Nabeel had few selected pieces on display. I was immediately drawn to his collection and specially to this lovely Afghan style embroidered cape. I loved the cape and Nabeel insisted that I should try it on. While I was trying on the cape, I had this thought of turning the cape into a skirt. I discussed the idea with Nabeel and worked on the outfit. Since Nabeel frequently travels to London he was able to deliver the outfit to me here. When I received the skirt, it was exactly what I wanted. Nabeel was able to translate my conversation on Whatsapp and bring my vision to life.

I wore this skirt on two different occasions and styled it a bit differently to create a day and evening look. For the day event I wore it with a crisp white collar shirt and a statement neck piece from Zara.

London Bollywood Boat Party

I have lived in London for over 10 years now but never got the chance to be on a boat party. So this time when a friend was organising the most popular Bollywood boat party, I didn’t want to miss the opportunity. Thanks to Party Protocol, we got to relish some foot-stomping Bollywood music in the backdrop of our beautiful London city. Our journey started from Temple Pier and the boat took us around all the major London landmarks situated along Thames. The iconic Chelsea bridge was a special treat to the eyes. I don’t know know about you but I find water very therapeutic. I gives me a sense of calm. I can just sit and gaze flowing water forever. This concoction  of music, water, friends and London city refreshed my soul for good. If you like Bollywood music then I totally recommend Party Protocol boat parties.

I thoroughly enjoyed this unique experience and made some wonderful memories. Sharing my Bollywood boat party photo diary on the blog today. Hope you enjoy it.

Umrao Jaan Garden Gala

asian fashion blog umrao jaan the rednotebook blogAs I made my way through the marigold-clad black iron gate into the sprawling garden estate, I was transported  into a poetic world of Lucknow’s Mughal courtyard. Billionaires H S Narula and wife Surina opened their lush green garden estate to support renowned South Asian dance company Akademi. The charity garden gala recreated the magic of Umrao Jaan – an Urdu classic, based on the famous Lucknow courtesan. It was Akademi’s first ever fundraising gala and their sheer dedication toward their passion was fully evident in the interactive Umrao Jaan narration. It was conceptualised by Mira Kaushik, Director, Akademi and brought to life by creative director Subhalaxmi Mukherjee. Continue Reading

Introducing Raishma – a flair for fusion fashion

Its been a while since I posted something on the blog. Life hasn’t been easy for me in the past few weeks. Initially I was recovering from a traumatic C-section and then trying to adjust to the routine of sleepless nights. Things have calmed down a bit but I am still trying to adjust to my new life. Hopefully I’ll get there in the end. I have been away from the blog so working on a new piece is like therapy for me. I am trying to come out of my shell and get back to a routine. Lately all I have been wanting to do is hide under my duvet and shy away from reality.

To be honest I did not want to do an outfit post as I was very conscious of my post natal body. I looked in my wardrobe and had a ‘I don’t have anything to wear’ moment pretty much everyday. I needed to get out of my pyjamas and being a stylist pushed me to wear clothes that suit my current body shape. So when I received this lovely Kaftan from Raishma couture, I just knew it would suit me. Today’s blog post is about brand Raishma and its lovely fusion fashion collection. Raishma Islam is the creative force behind the brand, designing couture bridal and evening gowns with a fusion twist that the label is so well known for. Raishma had a passion for fashion from a very young age. She was attracted to the glamour and style of the western fashion industry and fabrics from the Indian domain. That’s how her collection was born, with a focus on the fusion style of dressing. Raishma is very passionate about her work and wants to give women a taste of fusion fashion where they can mix their Indian and western wardrobes. Her collection is very versatile and aimed at both traditional and non- traditional customers. What I personally like is the collection of suits and dresses that can be worn as a suit for a traditional event or as a dress. The lovely ready to wear collection is available online at http://www.raishma.co.uk/ and the website is also quiet easy to use. Other than ready-to-wear style, Raishma also offers bespoke bridalwear. Given her flair for fusion fashion, her collection is very popular in mixed raced marriages and registry weddings. You can have a closer look at all the lovely outfits at Raishma’s new store in East Shopping Centre in Green Street.

Here is how I styled the Kaftan: I paired it up with black trousers and tan coloured court shoes. The accessories were in shade of gold to match the outfit – gold bangles, delicate rings and earrings completed my look. I managed to shoot these pictures for the blog in lovely Cotswolds during the bank holiday weekend. It was so fresh and refreshing to get out and do what I love doing. I loved how the Kaftan flattered my shaped. Raishma online offers a range of beautiful Kaftans for you to choose from. You can wear them with or without trousers and go from a day to evening look. I would say this kaftan is ideal for dinner parties or Asian events.

I hope you enjoyed reading the post. I know most women do not feel body confident after delivery but there is no point in hiding under the duvet like me. First step towards feeling body confident is to accept your current body shape and dress to suit your shape. Getting ready for this shoot gave me a lot of confidence to express myself once again through style. I know the journey to getting fitter is long and hard but there is no point in shoving the issue under the carpet. Do share your experiences with me. I look forward to hearing your stories.
